Hello everyone! My name is Daeun. I'm a doctoral candidate in the Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies program at FSU. I grew up in South Korea, and before attending college in Seoul, I spent my K-12 years in a small coastal city, Dangjin. I study the role of technology in addressing educational inequality. Currently, I'm working on my dissertation on the role of social media in potential first-generation college students' college choice system.
I've experienced a variety of technologies in educational settings. One of the instructors I had in my master's program used Socrative for students to throw questions during lectures. The questions posed by the students would show up on the screen so that every student could see them, and the instructor would address them. In another class, I collaborated with my classmates to develop a Wiki page using Google Docs to explore the topic 'collaborative learning.' At FSU, I've used Flipgrid to record introduction videos/discussions, Voicethread for presentations, and blog posts for reflections on course content. I found the majority of the technologies to be effective for my learning.
As for my Personal Learning Network, for my professional growth, I follow many PhD students and accounts that provide tips about academic life on Twitter (now switched to X), thereby getting a lot of helpful tips about research, job search, conference opportunities, etc. I'm also in several Slack channels for my research projects, interacting asynchronously with colleagues. I also meet with my colleagues online and in person for research group meetings. I've taught EME2040 for four years now, and I've been inspired a lot by my students' works and learned about new technologies from them. I go to Strozier and Dirac often for study and writing. These people, tools, and spaces comprise my PLN, which has helped me adjust to graduate school life and academia.
